Family Hotel in Salzburg: Our Stay at Sheraton Grand

If you’re looking for a family-friendly hotel in Salzburg that balances comfort, convenience, and a touch of luxury, the Sheraton Grand Salzburg is an easy choice.

We recently visited Salzburg with kids and it was very important for us to stay in a family friendly hotel. With spacious rooms, thoughtful amenities for kids, and a location right next to Mirabell Gardens, Sheraton Grand made exploring the city stress-free while giving the whole family a comfortable place to recharge.

In this post I am sharing our ultimate hotel experience highlighting rooms, amenities, service, restaurants, nearby attractions, and also day trips to consider.

Family Hotel in Salzburg: Sheraton Grand Overview

The Sheraton Grand Salzburg is a polished five-star property that manages to balance business-travel with family-friendly warmth. The interiors are stylish yet not intimidating, and the overall vibe is upscale but approachable.

It’s one of those hotels where you can comfortably roll in with kids after a day of adventures and still enjoy a glass of wine lounge without feeling out of place.

Location: Next Door to Mirabell Gardens

The hotel’s location is one of its biggest assets. Situated directly beside Mirabell Gardens (yes, the very gardens where Julie Andrews and the von Trapp kids sang Do-Re-Mi), it offers instant access to a beautiful green space where kids can run, climb, and explore.

  • The Old Town is just a 10–15 minute walk across the Salzach River.
  • The main train station is less than 10 minutes away, making day trips super easy.
  • Cafés, bakeries, and local shops are within steps, so you don’t have to go far for a quick snack or coffee.

Getting Here

  • By Train: Salzburg’s Hauptbahnhof (main station) is about a 10-minute walk or a 5-minute taxi ride. If you’re arriving from Vienna or Munich, the train is comfortable, scenic, and kid-friendly.
  • By Plane: Salzburg Airport is just 15–20 minutes from the hotel by taxi. Shuttle buses also run into the city center, but with kids and luggage, a taxi is often worth it.
  • By Car: If you’re renting a car for day trips, the hotel has parking (for a fee). That said, Salzburg itself is compact and walkable, and public transport covers most routes — so unless you’re planning multiple Alpine drives, you can easily skip the car and utilize Salzburg Card for your transportation which will also give you free and discounted entry to major sights and museums.

Family Tip: If you’re traveling with strollers, note that Salzburg’s Old Town has cobblestones. A lightweight stroller or baby carrier makes exploring much easier.

Rooms & Suites

Spacious rooms are the real win here for families. By European city standards, they’re generous — which means room for an extra bed or crib without everyone feeling squished!

In our case we did not need a crib for our 2 year old as we were settled in connecting rooms which is always so convenient when traveling with kids.

Sheraton Grand Salzburg Room Highlights:

  • Family-friendly layouts with connecting room options.
  • Large windows overlooking either the city or Mirabell Gardens.
  • Spacious bathrooms with double bathtubs.
  • Comfortable beds and plush linens for a good night’s sleep.
  • Kids welcome gifts always so appreciated.

If you’re traveling with more than one child, I recommend booking a suite. The extra living area gives you space to relax once the kids are asleep.

Restaurants & All-Inclusive Breakfast

Inside the Sheraton Grand, you’ll find two main dining options:

  • Mirabell Restaurant – Elegant dining with Austrian classics and international favorites, overlooking the gardens.

This was our favorite place to eat and weather was so nice during our stay that we enjoyed our long meals.

If you plan to stay here or just visit for a dinner, make sure you come hungry. You will not get overwhelmingly large list of menu items but be assured every item is perfectly done.

We tried multiple dishes and everything was delicious. If I had to choose my favorites I would say Salmon Teriyaki, and traditional Wiener Schnitzel.

Kids absolutely loved Spaghetti, Schnitzels and the fish sticks with vegetables were their top favorite.

And for a dessert, you need to try their famous traditional apple strudel. I can safely say it was the best apple strudel we have tried in Austria.

  • Piano Bar & Bistro – A more casual spot, perfect for lighter bites or late-night snacks.

It was perfect lounging here with refreshments and light snacks during afternoon harsh heat.

But the real star? The breakfast buffet. It’s one of those spreads where everyone finds their happy place.

Freshly baked breads, buttery croissants, eggs made to order, local cheeses, fruit, yogurt, smoked salmon, and plenty of strong Austrian coffee.

For kids, there are pancakes, hot chocolate, and pastries galore. Starting the day with a feast makes sightseeing smoother (and avoids mid-morning meltdowns).

Things to Do in Salzburg with Kids (Near the Hotel)

What I loved most about staying here is that some of Salzburg’s best family activities are literally around the corner:

  • Mirabell Gardens & Palace – Right outside your door, kids can play among fountains, statues, and maze-like hedges. There’s also a playground nearby.
  • Mozart’s Residence – Just a short walk away, this museum gives a peek into Salzburg’s most famous composer. While it’s more for adults, older kids often enjoy it.
  • Haus der Natur (Museum of Natural History) – A must-visit with kids. Think dinosaurs, aquariums, hands-on science exhibits — and it’s only a 10–12 minute walk from the hotel.
  • Salzburg Marionette Theatre – A charming option for families, with puppet shows that often include The Sound of Music.
  • Salzach River Cruise – Fun boat rides that give you a whole new perspective of the city without tiring little legs.

All of these are within walking distance, which makes planning your days a lot easier when you have younger travelers.

Why Salzburg is a Great Base for Day Trips

Salzburg’s compact size and well-connected train system make it ideal for exploring beyond the city. Staying at the Sheraton Grand means you can come back to comfort every evening without the hassle of repacking bags.

Here are some of the best family-friendly day trips:

  • Hallstatt – The fairy-tale lakeside village about 2.5 hours away by train and bus. Kids love the lake views, boat rides, and salt mine tours.
  • Werfen Ice Caves (Eisriesenwelt) – The largest ice caves in the world. A thrilling adventure for older kids and teens (be prepared for a bit of hiking).
  • Berchtesgaden, Germany – Just across the border, where you can explore the salt mines or take the scenic Jennerbahn cable car for stunning Alpine views.
  • Königssee Lake – Crystal-clear waters surrounded by mountains — rent an electric boat and enjoy a peaceful family outing..

Sound of Music Bus Tour

Chances are if you visit Salzburg, you have seen the movie “Sound of Music”. If you have not, you absolutely need to see it before your trip. If you are a big fan, you could also consider booking one of the hotels special package The Hills are Alive – 60 years of The Sound of Music in Salzburg.

In addition It is extremely easy to organize the bus tour from the hotel which was the highlight of our visit. The bus stop in only about 1-2 minutes walk from the hotel which is very convenient.

While you won’t hit every single filming location, you can expect to see about three highlights — including the iconic Mirabell Gardens. But the tour is far more than just a checklist of movie spots.

Along the way, you’ll hear behind-the-scenes stories from The Sound of Music, pick up quirky facts about Salzburg’s history, and soak in a scenic drive through both the city and its surrounding countryside. It’s equal parts nostalgia and sightseeing — a playful, memorable way to experience Salzburg from a fresh perspective.

Travel Hack: Most tours start right in the city center, which means you don’t need to juggle buses or taxis with kids in tow.

From the Sheraton Grand, it’s usually just a short stroll to the meeting point. We loved being able to sip our morning coffee at breakfast, wander over to join our tour, and be back at the hotel by evening without any stress. Convenience like that makes exploring Salzburg with kids so much smoother.
